How to Add a Service Charge to an Invoice

Adding a service charge to an invoice is a simple way to help cover the extra costs of running your business. This fee applies to the entire invoice, no matter how your customer pays, and appears alongside sales tax and discounts in the invoice summary. You can choose the fee type, the name of the fee, and decide if it should be taxable, all in just a few clicks. Follow the steps below to start adding service charges to your invoices.

Adding a Service Charge

  • Go to the Invoicing tab inside Autobooks.
  • Click New Invoice to start a new single or recurring invoice.
  • Choose your due date and a customer (either from your list or add a new one), then add all your desired products / services for that customer.
  • Near the bottom of your invoice builder (next to Add Discount and Turn on sales tax) click Add Service Charge.

    • Give your service charge a name.  Example of an acceptable service charge name: "Setup Fee" or "Delivery Fee".

This feature does not allow you to charge "credit card fees" or "processing fees" to your customers. If you see an error appear when naming your service charge, check to make sure you're not using these terms, then choose an alternative name for your service charge.
